In this review, I will be taking a look at an awesome Bluetooth hearing protection headset called the Walker Razor XV with Bluetooth. It is unique in that it is a neck-worn device with retractable earbuds, which provides a higher Noise Reduction Rating than most over the hear headsets!

Noise Reduction Rating (NRR)

By utilizing sound activation compression circuits this headset is able to provide an NRR of 31 dB. This is an extremely high rating, especially when compared to most over-the-ear headsets which are lucky to get into the high 20s.

Not only does this system protect you from potentially harmful sounds in your environment, but they also enhance your natural hearing ability up to 9 times normal levels. They do this by incorporating Hi-gain omnidirectional microphones into their design. This means even though you hearing is protected, you’ll still be able to carry a conversation or take orders from those around you.

Battery Life

According to the manufacturer’s information, this headset should get you about 10 hours of life on a single charge. That being said, there are multiple reviews on Amazon that mention the battery life being much less than that. They place it more at 3-5 hours on a single charge.

In an effort to help save battery life, there is an auto-shut-off feature that will activate after 4-6 hours of inactivity.

There is a built-in rechargeable 250Mah Lipo battery and an AC wall adapter with USB port and 1-meter Micro USB charging cord included in the package.

Bluetooth Range/Connectivity

The Bluetooth range and connectivity are nothing to boast about, but it’s not horrible either. I can’t tell you an exact range, but based on Amazon reviews, you shouldn’t have any problems as long as you keep your phone on your body somewhere while you’re working.

There were a couple reviewers who mentioned they have had some trouble getting their devices to pair up with the headset, but this doesn’t seem like to common of a problem.

Sound Volume/Quality

The sound quality produced by the Walker Razor XV is just what you’d expect from any standard earbud speaker. They good enough to sound nice, but nothing that is going to blow your mind.

The volume will get decently high, but remember, this is a hearing protection device, so they’ll protect your ears from their speakers as well and limit the sound coming from the speakers to safe levels, so not to expose your ears to unsafe decibel levels.

This headset also offers independent volume control for the environmental sounds picked up through the omnidirectional speakers and the audio coming from your Bluetooth feed. This allows you to manipulate exactly what you’re hearing at any given moment. If you need to ensure you are hearing your instructor’s commands, you can turn up the environmental sounds and turn down the Bluetooth feed, or vice-versa.

Size & Comfort

The physical dimensions are 9.2 x 7.1 x 2.8 inches and they come in at a mere 8 ounces. This comes in significantly smaller and lighter than just about any other over-the-ear hearing protection devices.

Most reviewers on Amazon mention that the earbuds are quite comfy and do a great job blocking out sounds; however, there are a few who say the earbuds don’t really fit that well. This headset comes with two different styles of sound reducing tips, each in multiple sizes, to ensure maximum comfort and noise reduction for extended periods of time.

The only discomfort I can foresee anyone having with this headset would be if they really don’t like things on their neck…but I don’t know if that is actually a problem for anyone or not.

Durability

As long as you’re willing to take care of this headset and not do anything stupid you shouldn’t have any major problems with the Razor XV headset. There’s no indication in any of the manufacturer’s material that they are waterproof or water-resistant, so you’ll want to make sure you don’t submerge them or use them in particularly wet environments.

The earbuds are retractable to allow for safer storage; although, there were a couple accounts of the retracting device breaking.

Price

This headset comes in at $122.96 on Amazon for a new pair, which isn’t cheap, but it’s also cheaper than many other high-quality earmuff style Bluetooth-enabled hearing protection devices.

Conclusion

To finish, if you’re looking for a reasonably priced Bluetooth-enabled hearing protection headset that won’t get in your way, make your ears sweat, or squeeze your head for hours on end, then the Walker XV Headset with Bluetooth will fit the bill! Walker has produced a small, lightweight device that gets the job done better than almost any other hearing protection device, earmuffs included.
