SAS Safety 6108 Digital Earmuff Review | Solid and Affordable

SAS-Safety-6108-Digital-Earmuff-Review-AngleIn this review I will be taking a look at a popular hearing protection headset called the SAS Safety 6108 Digital Earmuff. I like to keep things honest around here, so right off the bat, I’m going to tell you these aren’t the greatest option out there (they actually aren’t Bluetooth enabled) BUT they are relatively low priced and will get the job done. So, as most things go, you get what you pay for.

Summary

The SAS Safety 6108 Digital Earmuffs are nothing to brag about; however, they will keep your ears safe and do allow you to listen to either the radio (AM/FM tuner) or any MP3 player that is connected via cord. It is not Bluetooth enabled. The price is reasonable and, as usual, you get what you pay for. It’s not loaded with features, but it will get the job done!

In-Depth Review

Now, we’ll get into the nitty-gritty of this review. I’ll cover many of the features you’ll want to consider when looking for the headset for you. If you’d like to know a little about each of these features and why they are important, please check out this post:

What to Consider when Purchasing Bluetooth Hearing Protection

Noise Reduction Rating (NRR)

This headset has an NRR of 25, which is actually fairly good! These should protect you from just about any dangerously noisy environment such as mowing the lawn, running a chainsaw, working in a wood shop, working in an industrial setting, and/or screaming children…etc.

Another neat feature about this headset is how it reduces the damaging noises in your environment without keeping out many of the other sounds you may actually want to hear such as voices or alarms.

Battery Life

Two AA batteries are what it takes to operate this headset. The battery life is, of course, based on how long you use the device and which features you are using. They should typically last a few solid workdays with one set of batteries.

If you’d like to save some money and not have to buy new batteries every few days, I’d encourage you to invest in some high-quality NiMH rechargeable batteries!

Bluetooth Range

As I mentioned in the beginning of this review, these Digital Earmuffs are not actually Bluetooth compatible. While this will prevent you from being able to connect them to your phone wirelessly, which is unfortunate, you will still be able to connect them via cord…so all is not lost.

SAS-Safety-6108-Digital-Earmuff-Review-PackageSound Volume/Quality

The sound quality you can expect to get from this headset is mediocre at best. It doesn’t have any special sound enhancing features so you won’t be blown away. That being said, they get the job done. Many reviewers on Amazon mention how the sound is a little heavy on the base at times and, unfortunately, there isn’t really any way to adjust the specific audio settings.

The volume tends to be on the low side as well, so you may have to keep it turned up all the way if you’re in a particularly loud environment. They also don’t have any sort of noise control for the speakers so you’ll need to make sure you’re not damaging your ears by having the volume too loud for extended periods of time.

Microphone

There is no microphone on this headset as it would be completely useless since it is not Bluetooth enabled or able to communicate or sync with your phone in any way whatsoever.

Size & Comfort

A big plus to this particular headset is that it is smaller and lighter than most, which means it will be more bearable for long uses and easier to store. The exact dimensions are 7.2″ x 4″ x 10″ and it weighs a mere 9.6 ounces.

The ear cups are padded to make them more comfortable and the headband is adjustable. That being said, there were quite a few reviewers who said this headset always squeezed their head…my favorite one phrased it in this way: “it squeezed my head like a zit.” So…take that for what it’s worth and be cautious if you have a larger than normal head such as myself.

Durability

The durability of this SAS Safety headset is good. It has a flexible antenna which is nice because you don’t have to worry as much about catching it on things and snapping it off like you do with some others. In addition, the manufacturers have made a couple updates to previous models in response to customer feedback. They have made the cables more durable so they don’t fray as easily and have strengthened the battery covers so they don’t break as easily.

Other Capabilities

This headset contains an AM/FM radio with controls and a digital display. You are also able to preset channels so you don’t have to scan for them each and every time you wear them. This display also has a clock you can set; however, the clock is always on, even when you’re not using the headset…so it’s a great way to drain your batteries for no reason at all.

The headset is also MP3 compatible and comes with the appropriate cord to connect it to any MP3 player through the standard headphone jack. This means you can listen to just about anything you want if you have a smartphone. While it’s not as convenient as Bluetooth, it will still work well as long as you are able run the cord in a safe way from your device to your headset.

Price

This model will run you about $40 on amazon, which isn’t bad at all. It is on the cheaper end, but that should be expected since it isn’t Bluetooth enabled and doesn’t have many extra features.

SAS-Safety-6108-Digital-Earmuff-Review-AngleConclusion

In conclusion, the SAS Safety 6108 Digital Earmuff will get the job done. It’s not going to be the most comfortable one out there or the best sounding or packed with the most features. However, if you’re looking for a simple earmuff that can protect your ears while you work and will allow you to listen to the radio or connect to an MP3 player or your phone, then these will get the job done.
